Fourteen Years Before The Tree Bears Fruit.
Alicia Douvall and her daughter Georgia went to Morocco, met the women who press argan oil by hand, and came home with a business. The oil is worth the fuss: an argan tree takes fourteen years to fruit at all and is harvested for three months of the year, which is why Moroccan women have treated it as a closely held secret for centuries and why the cheap stuff on the high street is so often not really the stuff at all. Theirs is first cold pressed, extracted without heat or water, and comes from one cooperative they work with directly.
That cooperative is the point of the whole enterprise. The women who run it earn a proper wage with childcare, healthcare and education attached, and there is now a school there that Douvalls helped build. The cooperative also runs a reforestation project, which matters rather a lot for a tree that takes fourteen years to get going. Everything is then blended and bottled in small batches in the UK, across skincare, haircare, makeup and a candle, and a tree is planted through the Eden Project for every sale.
