The Artist's House Gallery

On Market Jew Street in Penzance there is a gallery where the artist works in the studio directly above the shop, an arrangement that was once entirely ordinary and is now vanishingly rare. Sarah Bell screen prints and paints watercolours of Cornwall, and everything downstairs was made one flight of stairs from where you are standing when you decide to buy it. Originals and prints both, so the work is available at more than one price without a single thing being outsourced to anybody.

The subjects are the ones that make people fall for Cornwall in the first place: swimmers, the sea and the things living in it, the landscape, and a strong art deco streak running through the lot that gives the work its graphic punch. The colour is vivid rather than gentle, which is the correct response to that particular coastline and a considerable relief after the muted seaside palette everybody else reaches for the moment they see a fishing boat.
