Paul Berg began when three Estonians, Mari, Kerly and Egert, noticed that winter swimming had quietly become a national pastime and that nobody had bothered to solve the genuinely awkward part, which is not the swimming at all but the ten minutes afterwards. Their answer is a robe cut so generously you can get entirely dressed inside it, in a waterproof, windproof, breathable shell, with a closed hood, fleece-lined pockets and reflective detailing for the walk back in the dark.

The Nordic is the year-round one, lined with woolly fleece and rated to 10,000mm, a number that means very little until the afternoon it starts sleeting sideways and you discover it means everything. The Light is the softshell version for spring and autumn, happy somewhere between five and fifteen degrees, and there is a children's size for the small people who are somehow never cold. Everything is oversized and unisex by design, so anyone wanting one simply as a very good coat rather than a portable changing room should take a size down. The outer fabric comes from Finland, the lining from Lithuania, and the robes are made in Estonia.
