The common error is going small. In a sitting room the front legs of the seating should sit on the rug; in a bedroom you want it to extend past the bed on the sides you actually get out of; under a dining table it needs to be big enough that chairs stay on it when pulled out. Get that right and the rest is a pleasure. Get it wrong and no amount of good weaving will save it.

Wool, jute, cotton, and what each one is for.

Wool is resilient, takes dye beautifully and sheds for the first few months, which is normal and stops. Jute is hard-wearing and textural but does not enjoy damp, so it is happier in a bedroom than a bathroom. Flatweaves are reversible and easy to live with; a pile rug is warmer underfoot and harder to clean. Handmade rugs vary from the photograph, which is the point of them. Layer with cushions and blankets and throws, or set the room with lighting.
