Twenty Years Of Knitwear, Applied To Very Small People

Helen knew what she was doing before she started

Twenty years designing childrenswear and knitwear for other people, and then a decision to do it properly for herself. Fable & Bear is what came out: organic cotton knits for babies and toddlers, made in Huddersfield, with the sort of construction detail that only somebody who has spent two decades looking at seams would bother with.

The freckles are embroidered by hand

Each character has a face on the front and a silhouette on the back, with freckles, noses and whiskers stitched rather than printed. It is a small thing, it takes considerably longer, and it is the difference between a garment and a keepsake.

Monochrome, unisex and entirely seasonless

Which is a set of decisions rather than a lack of imagination. Nothing dates, everything mixes, and a piece bought for one baby works perfectly well for the next one regardless of who arrives. The mock wooden buttons on the shoulders and inner leg are functional, because getting a baby into anything is difficult enough.

Organic cotton throughout

Every piece in the collection, knitted from handpicked crop, which Helen will tell you produces a softer yarn and does rather less to the land it grew on.
