Shoes With a Previous Life as a Car.

KIRA make shoes in Estonia from things that were already made once. The soles are recycled car tyres, the insoles are felt made from plastic bottles, and the uppers come from recycled cotton or the water-resistant leftovers of other shoe production. It is, when you think about it, a rather neat solution to two problems at once: too many old tyres, and not enough good shoes.

Built in a boot factory.

The shoes are made in Tartu, in a factory that spent decades producing military and trekking boots, which explains why a pair of ballet flats made from tyres turns out to be considerably tougher than it looks. The range runs from ballerinas and everyday sneakers to proper hiking boots, and everything is vegan.

And they take them back.

When a pair wears out, KIRA will take it back, repair it where it can be repaired, and keep it out of landfill where it cannot. It is a take-back scheme with an actual workshop behind it, rather than a promise printed on a swing tag.
