Rather a Lot of Desk for Someone Aged Four.

Luula began, as a surprising number of good ideas do, with a disappointing present. A Latvian family bought their four-year-old a plastic drawing board, watched her use it for roughly an afternoon, and concluded, with the quiet determination of parents who have stepped on one too many crayons, that they could do considerably better.

What they made is a birch plywood table that is, frankly, better equipped than most grown-up offices. There is a roll of paper, a chalkboard, a clear acrylic board for tracing and shadow stories, a sand tray hidden under the lid, and compartments for the things that would otherwise be distributed evenly across the floor. It adjusts in height from toddler to school age, so the same desk sees them through scribbling, spelling and eventually the homework they will insist they have already done.

There are matching chairs that grow alongside it, and climbing sets and wall boards in the same pale birch, which looks rather more like proper furniture than children's things generally manage, and is a great relief to anyone who has to live with it.
