Gorvett & Stone
Chocolates Made With Unapologetic Indulgence
Two people who left the wine trade
Gorvett & Stone began in 2003 when Elinor Gorvett and Matthew Stone took a break from careers in wine and went travelling. They came back with the conviction that chocolate could be every bit as complex and interesting as wine, which was not then a widely held British view. The shop opened in Henley-on-Thames in 2004, and they have been at it ever since.
Everything made on the premises
All of it is handmade in small batches from French couverture, developed, produced and packaged in one building. Crisp honeycomb dipped in chocolate, carefully judged truffles, seasonal things that come and go. Nothing overly sweet, nothing overworked, just clean confident flavours that speak for themselves. They are also quietly proud that their cinder toffee has some of the largest bubbles on the market, which tells you the level of attention involved.
Also on the shelves at Fortnum & Mason
Alongside their own shop and website, Gorvett & Stone supply delis, fine food shops and Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly. Not bad for a two-person idea worked out in a home kitchen.
Visit the shop
Gorvett & Stone trade from 21 Duke Street, Henley-on-Thames RG9 1UR, a tall, skinny Victorian building in the centre of town where the shop, kitchens and office all sit under one roof.
