A Dutch founder in south London

Jo-Ann Nitzsche started Ralph's Orchard in 2021 and named it after her youngest son. She had loved candles for years and eventually decided to make her own, which is how most candle companies begin and rather less often how they turn out this well.

The vessels are the thing

Vintage tableware, antique containers and assorted rescued glass, cleaned up and filled rather than thrown away. It means no two are quite alike, and it means the empty one is worth keeping, which is more than can be said for most candles once they have burned down.

Soy, coconut and, increasingly, rapeseed

Hand-poured in England in small batches, vegan and phthalate-free throughout, with the range moving steadily towards rapeseed. Alongside the candles there are reed diffusers, tealights, wax melts, soaps and incense.

A tree for every order

Planted through a partner, with a published forest you can go and look at, which is a good deal more accountable than a line on a website.
