There is a version of an Italian morning that most of us have only ever managed on holiday, and it involves standing about with a coffee for far longer than anybody strictly needs to. Catherine and Pauline, who had already put in ten years working together before deciding that what they really wanted was to do something enjoyable, have built an entire small business around it. They design from Gioiosa Marea, a town on the Sicilian coast whose name means something close to joyful tide, which is showing off rather, and they are quite right to.
Mugs With Something To Say For Themselves.
Amore. Buongiorno. Ciao Bella. Cappuccino. Dolce far Niente, which is the sweetness of doing absolutely nothing and frankly ought to be on more crockery. The lettering is lifted from Italian signwriting of the fifties and sixties and sits on a clean modern shape, and at three hundred millilitres each mug is sized for a proper cappuccino rather than the enormous bucket of coffee the rest of us have somehow agreed to. Worth a look alongside the cups and mugs and the wider kitchen and dining shelves.
Posters With Nothing Extra On Them.
The prints take the same approach and then remove everything else: a single Italian phrase, generous space around it, no ornament, no flourishes, nothing asking for attention. Buon Appetito over a kitchen table, Limoncello in a hallway, Felicita somewhere you will see it on the way out of the door.
