Mitten Patterns, For the Whole House.

Every region of Estonia once had its own mitten pattern, knitted in its own colours, recognisable at a glance to anyone who knew where to look. Loko takes those patterns, the Harju County mitten, the Viru County mitten, the fly pattern from Hanikatsi on the island of Hiiumaa, and puts them on textiles for the house, which is a rather more practical place for them than a museum drawer.

Including, naturally, the sauna.

Among the cushions and table pieces there are sauna bench pads, which keep the bench clean and stop you being gently roasted by the wood, and which make sense the moment you realise how seriously Estonians take their saunas. Everything washes at forty degrees, so the heritage survives contact with ordinary life.

And cutting boards from a workshop on Hiiumaa.

The boards are made by a single woodworker in a small workshop on the island, so no two are the same. One narrow board is sold, according to the brand, specifically for slicing sausage, on the grounds that everybody else in the house cuts it far too thin. It is hard to argue with a product that confident about its purpose.
