Like so many in the 20th century, Giovanni Zangrandi's life was defined and devastated by war. She was in the Resistance, fighting so she and her lover Severino could be together in their dream space: the haven they'd build overlooking the Marmarole, a mile up in the mountains. But weeks before the end of the war, her dream of living in the mountains with her husband was taken from her: Severino was killed in April 1945. Zangrandi was devastated - and her dream changed. She built and ran an alpine refuge for those in need - found on Monte Antelao in Northern Italy. Violence took her love, but her dream survived - a reminder that life continues after all the bloodshed.
