Beautifully made clothing, wooden toys, keepsakes, bags and things designed to survive being genuinely used rather than displayed. A number of these have already outlived the child they were bought for and moved on to a sibling, which is rather the highest compliment available.

Many of the brands here are family-owned themselves, and a surprising number were started by a parent who could not find the thing they wanted and grew impatient. It shows, in ways that are hard to name and easy to notice.
A note for the gift-giver
The unglamorous present is frequently the one that gets used daily for two years. Bear that in mind before dismissing a muslin.
