Estelle Studio has been going since 2022, run by two members of the same family in Calgary, Alberta, pouring soy wax by hand into shapes that are frankly more sculpture than candle. Mermaids. Cats. Ribbed pillars in trios. The sort of object you buy for a shelf and then feel slightly guilty about setting fire to.

Mostly unscented, entirely deliberate

These are decorative pieces first. Most are unscented, which is unusual and rather the point: the appeal is the form, the surface and the colour rather than what happens when you strike a match. Estelle themselves treat them as objects designed for display, with burning as an option rather than the purpose.

Also, the candlestick holders

Ribbed jesmonite holders in muted tones, which do the same job in the opposite direction: made to hold a candle rather than be one.

If you do light one

Two hours at a time, no longer, and stop when a quarter inch of wax remains. Because of the irregular shapes, burn time varies considerably from one piece to the next. Their guidance, not ours, and worth following.
