Most skincare labels read like a chemistry exam you did not revise for. Skin & Tonic went the other way entirely and set itself a rule: a maximum of seven plant-based ingredients per product, all certified organic, every one of them there for a reason you can actually follow. It is a considerably harder way to formulate than the alternative, because with seven ingredients there is nowhere at all to hide.

The brand started at a Hackney market stall in 2015 and the range still reflects that beginning: unisex, unfussy, and built around a small number of things that do several jobs each. The Calm Balm is the one people come back for, a buttery balm of lavender, chamomile and calendula that is as close as a jar gets to a deep breath, and there are face oils, cleansers and masks around it. The packaging is recyclable or zero waste throughout.
