Small Spaces Deserve Great Design
The first room they will ever call theirs
Which makes it an odd thing to furnish entirely in primary colours and cartoon characters, on the assumption that a person under four has no taste and will not develop any until they are old enough to complain. The brands here take the opposite view.
Playful without being patronising
Prints by independent artists who paint them first and print them second, handmade room accessories, storage that somebody thought about, and pieces designed to still look right when the child is nine and mortified by anything with a rabbit on it.
Built to outlast the phase
A nursery has a shelf life of about two years before it becomes a bedroom, and the things worth buying are the ones that survive the transition. Rather a lot of what is sold for children's rooms does not, which is the entire reason this collection exists.
Mostly made by people with children of their own
Which shows up in the details: the height of a hook, the weight of a basket, whether a print survives being touched by somebody with jam on their hands. A good number of these are family-owned businesses designing for other people's families.
