Our Mission
The Best Things Are Made by People You Have Never Heard Of.
The Problem, Plainly
Somewhere near you there is a person making something genuinely good. A ceramicist who has spent fifteen years getting one glaze right. A leatherworker who could tell you which tannery, which hide, which week. A shop owner who has walked every trade fair in Europe and comes back with four things.
You will almost certainly never find them.
Not because they are hiding. Because being findable online is now a full-time job with a budget attached, and they are already doing three jobs without one. The skill that makes their work worth having is precisely the skill that leaves no hours for the part where anyone hears about it.
What Tends to Happen Next
They end up on a platform that treats them as inventory. Ranked by an algorithm, buried under whoever paid more, competing on price with something mass-produced that looks vaguely similar in a thumbnail.
Or they give up on the online part entirely and stay local, which is a perfectly good life and also a smaller one than their work deserves.
Neither outcome is anybody's fault. It is simply what happens when discovery is sold to the highest bidder.
What We Are Trying to Build Instead
A place where being good at making things is enough.
Every brand here was chosen by a person who looked at the work and decided it was worth your attention. Nobody paid to be here. Nobody outranks anybody by spending more. There is no algorithm deciding what surfaces, because the choosing already happened, by hand, before anything went live.
That is a slower way to build a marketplace and a smaller one. It is also the only version worth building. How we choose brands.
Why We Let You Shop by What You Care About
Most retail asks what you want to buy. We think the more interesting question is what you want to support.
So you can browse by purpose: sustainably made, women-led, family-run, B Corp certified, upcycled. Or by place, if you would rather your money stayed nearer home, or travelled somewhere specific.
It sounds like a filter. It is really a different way of deciding, and it puts the things a maker cares about at the front rather than in a paragraph nobody scrolls to.
The Part That Is About Us, Not You
We were an independent brand before we were a marketplace. We spent years sending emails into silence, paying to be somewhere that did not much care whether we succeeded, and doing the online part badly because the making came first.
Everything here is built by people who remember that. It is why our brands set their own prices and their own shipping. Why we do not demand exclusivity or push discounts. Why joining takes an afternoon rather than a fortnight, because we wrote the software to make it so.
A marketplace that is exhausting to join quietly excludes the smallest makers, which are exactly the ones worth having.
What We Are Not
Not the biggest. Not trying to be. Scale is the thing that breaks curation, and curation is the entire product.
Not a solved position on sustainability, and not carbon neutral. We ask hard questions, we record the answers, and we decline the brands who cannot answer. That is a weaker thing than auditing and we would rather say so. Our code of ethics.
Not neutral either. We have opinions about what is worth making and who should benefit from it, and this whole business is those opinions with a checkout attached.
What Success Looks Like
A maker somewhere finds out that people in four countries want what they make, and builds a life on it.
A shop that has served one street brilliantly for twenty years starts serving people who will never walk down it.
And somebody, somewhere, buys one very good thing instead of five ordinary ones, and keeps it for twenty years.
That is the whole of it.
Come and Look
Explore the marketplace, meet the brands, or if you make something rather good, come and sell with us.
