Batanaful Hair & Skincare
The Tawira Are Known As The People Of Beautiful Hair.
In the rainforests of La Moskitia in eastern Honduras, the American palm produces a nut that the Indigenous Miskito people have been hand-harvesting and pressing for centuries. The process is slow and entirely manual, the oil is dark and thick and smells faintly of smoke and coffee, and one branch of the Miskito are known as the Tawira, which translates roughly as the people of beautiful hair. They were not being modest.
Kieran Agard, a former professional footballer, went to see how it was made, and in 2019 brought it here. Batanaful was the first brand to introduce authentic Batana oil to the UK and Europe and the first to be stocked by Holland & Barrett, and the oil is still bought directly from the communities who produce it. The range now runs from the pure oil through repairing shampoos and hair masks to the Wonder Oil, which blends Batana with rosemary, and on to silk pillowcases for anybody taking the whole business seriously. Everything is sulphate free and paraben free, and every bottle carries a certificate of authenticity, which tells you how much imitation Batana is now in circulation.
