Candledust

Candles That Arrive as a Bag of Sand.

A candle is normally a fixed object: one shape, one container, one scent, and when it is gone it is gone, leaving a jar you feel vaguely guilty about throwing away. Candledust sells the wax as fine plant-based granules instead. You pour it into whatever heat-resistant vessel you like, push a wick in, and light it. When it burns down, you change the wick and carry on with the same bowl.

The part that takes some getting used to.

It does look like sand, and the first time you pour it into a glass you will feel as though you have misunderstood something. Then it lights, burns with a soft flame and no wax welded to the bottom of the holder, and the whole business starts to seem obvious. Any heat-resistant glass, ceramic or metal container works, provided it is at least 8cm across.

Also useful for events.

It comes into its own across a long table, where twenty containers can be filled in the time it takes to unbox twenty candles, and nothing drips on the linen. The Estonian family behind it clearly worked this out some time ago, since weddings and banquets are a good part of what they do.
