A good coat is, it has to be said, the hardest-working thing in a man's wardrobe. It goes on over everything, it is seen before anything else, and for roughly half the year in this country it is, to all intents and purposes, the entire outfit. It is also the thing most of us put off buying until the first genuinely cold morning, and then buy at a slight jog, which is a pity, because a coat chosen with a little care has a way of staying with you for years, rather like a good friend, only warmer and far less likely to borrow money.
