The Largest Surface In The Room, Usually Ignored
Walls take the longest and get the least thought.
People will agonise over a sofa for six weeks and then leave four square metres of wall entirely blank, or worse, hang one thing dead centre at the wrong height. The wall is the biggest surface in the room and the cheapest to change your mind about, which makes it the most forgiving place to be brave.

Mirrors do two jobs
They are decorative and they are structural, in the sense that a mirror opposite a window will change how a dark room feels rather more effectively than another lamp. Worth hanging where the light is, not simply where the gap is.

Hang it a bit lower than you think
The usual advice is centre at eye level, around 145cm from the floor. Most people hang considerably higher than that and cannot work out why the room feels off. If it sits above a sofa, leave a hand's width between the top of the cushions and the bottom of the frame.
