Lighting

Lighting That Does More Than Illuminate

The cheapest way to change a room

People will spend a fortune on a sofa and then light the room with a single bulb in the ceiling, which is rather like buying a good suit and eating in it. The right light changes everything, and unlike most of the alternatives it can be done for the price of a lamp.

Sculptural, industrial, and one or two that were rescued

Floor lamps, pendants, table lamps and wall lights from independent makers. Contemporary and vintage-inspired, minimal and considerably less so. Some are new. Others are original shades pulled out of a Norfolk workshop, rewired properly, with switches that click the way switches used to.

Light is a material

Which is the part most lighting ignores. What matters is not the fitting but what it does to the room at eleven at night, and whether it makes the space feel like somewhere you want to sit. The pieces here were designed by people who thought about that first and the shape second.

Where to go next

Pair with mirrors, which do the same job by reflection, or the wider Home + Decor collection. Sort makers by location, or find them among our British Brands. The stories are in the journal.

If you're making something rather good, we'd love to hear about it.

We're selective. In the nicest possible way.
