This began with friends asking Maija Rieksta-Riekstiņa which cosmetics were actually vegan, and with Maija patiently reading the backs of bottles until she had quite enough of it. She was a mother of five with a good corporate job at the time, which she then left, on the rather brave theory that if nobody else was going to make the thing she would do it herself. Vegan Fox has been made by her family in Ogre, in Latvia, ever since, and registered with the Vegan Society since 2017, which is the part that turns the word on the label into something a customer can actually check.

The range covers face, body and hair, along with bath and shower, and includes solid bars for anyone trying to get the plastic out of the bathroom. Formulations run between 92 and 100 percent natural ingredients, built on plant oils, herbal extracts and butters, and the whole thing has picked up a run of Latvian and international awards along the way. The family also campaign against fur farming and fund local animal shelters, which is rather more than most brands mean when they say they care.
