Coats & Jackets
The First Thing People See And The Last Thing You Put On.
A coat does more work than almost anything else in a wardrobe. It is worn over everything, in front of everyone, for six months of the year, and it is the one garment you cannot simply decide against on a Tuesday morning in February. Which makes it a very odd thing to buy in a hurry, and almost everybody does.
Tailored wool for city dressing, oversized shapes for the days when comfort has stopped being negotiable, and blazers cut sharply enough to go over practically anything. The differences that matter are mostly the ones inside: the weight of the cloth, where the shoulder sits, whether the lining was thought about or simply added at the end. A coat that gets the shoulder right will be worn for a decade. One that does not will be quietly retired by the second winter.
Many of these are made in small numbers, which is a practical constraint rather than a marketing position and has the pleasant side effect of nobody else on the bus wearing yours.
