The Room, Considerably Improved.

Botanical Boys started in London in 2009 with terrariums, which are sealed glass jars that keep themselves alive while you do nothing whatsoever, and have since built out into everything that ought to sit around them. Baskets, bowls, pots and vases, candles, mirrors, textiles and cushions, much of it found on trips to South Africa and rather more interesting than the usual houseplant accessories.

The photography, which is the other half of it.

They also represent David Ballam, a South African fine art photographer who took his honours in photography in 2004 and has spent the years since travelling the continent with a camera. His work is large, quiet and extremely hard to walk past: portraits from the Omo Valley in Ethiopia and Lake Turkana in Kenya, the Mundari cattle herders of South Sudan, landscapes from Namibia. Printed big, on stretched canvas, and generally the thing a room ends up arranged around.

Plants, if you want them.

There are living frames and dividers for anyone whose ambitions have outgrown a windowsill, plus pots in every register from architectural to rustic to frankly vintage. The whole thing runs on the reasonable theory that a room with something alive in it beats one without, and that the pot matters nearly as much as the plant.
