Knitting can be mechanised. Weaving certainly can. Crochet cannot, because the hook has to pass through a loop that only exists because a hand put it there. Every crocheted object in the world was made by a person, one stitch at a time, which is a rather remarkable thing to be able to say about anything sold in 2026.

Happy Vanilla was started in London by Yina Wan, a crocheter of some obsession, and grew rather faster than expected: over 1,600 customers in the first year and boutiques across the country stocking it. The pieces are made by a network of thirty-odd skilled women, which is the only way a crochet brand ever scales.

For the kid who is still in there.

These are collectibles rather than toys: small, characterful, faintly absurd, and bought overwhelmingly by adults who would like something on a desk that makes them feel better about Wednesday. Nobody needs one. That has never been the point of a crocheted anything.
