The kind of shop you stumble upon on holiday, buy something wonderful from, and then spend years failing to find again.

New, and Rather Deliberately So
We will be straight with you, because we would always rather be straight than impressive. Brix + Mortar is new, and growing slowly on purpose. We add boutiques one at a time, wherever in the world we find them, and only when we are certain a shop is genuinely worth your attention. You will not find hundreds here. You will find a small, carefully chosen collection of the real thing, with a few more each month.
That is the entire point, not an apology for it. Anyone can sign up a thousand shops and look enormous by Friday. Looking after them is the hard part, and the part that tends to get skipped. We are doing it the other way round: a handful of shops, treated properly, long before we worry about a great many treated carelessly. Built slowly, and built to stay.
Real Shops, Already With Us
These are not names we invented for a homepage. They are real shops with real doors. Woven London, handloom cloth on the Caledonian Road. Anatomē, a botanical apothecary in Marylebone. Gorvett & Stone, chocolatiers who take it seriously. Salcombe Dairy, a working chocolate factory on the water in Devon, where you could stand at the glass and watch the truffles being made, which is a considerably better afternoon than most shopping. Benson + Clegg, cut from the proper London cloth. Kathy Kyle Studio, women-led and quietly brilliant. And, increasingly, shops further afield, a leather atelier in the Baltics, a glassworks in France, each worth crossing a border for.

Why a Real Shop Is Worth Finding
A great independent boutique is an act of curation in itself. The owner has walked the trade fairs, met the makers, backed their own judgement and filled a physical space with things they genuinely believe in. That taste, earned over years on a real high street, whether in Britain, the Baltics, across Europe or the far side of the Atlantic, is exactly what the internet is worst at faking and an algorithm can never reproduce.
When a shop like that closes, a high street loses far more than a unit. It loses a point of view. Bringing these boutiques online, on their own terms, is how a brilliant local shop starts reaching people who will never walk past it, and how it wins a little more of the future it has earned. Geography, we think, should not decide whether you get to find it.
How It Works
- Every boutique here is a real, physical, independent shop, with a genuine address and a genuine owner, wherever in the world it happens to be. Not a warehouse in a costume.
- Each ships direct from its own premises, packed by the people who chose the stock, so your order comes straight from the shop itself.
- We add boutiques slowly, and by hand, so every one is a shop we would happily send you to in person, if only it were not quite so far.
