A financial services manager who disliked candles
In the summer of 2016 Drew Cockton was managing in financial services and thoroughly unimpressed by what the high street was selling. Paraffin candles left sooty deposits on his walls, burned badly, and threw very little scent for the money. So he started making his own at the kitchen table of his Wirral home, in soy wax, with essential oils and a wooden wick, initially as presents for friends.
Within months he was making hundreds in his spare time and selling them at craft fairs. By that Christmas he could not keep up. In January 2017 he left his career to do it properly, joined by his partner Michael, and Owen Drew became a real business. Drew died some years later. The company he built continues, run by the team who were there from the beginning, from the Wirral, by hand.
