4am Studio

Designers Who Work Until Four In The Morning

4AM is a London studio run by four designers, Haoran Bie, Shuyu Bai, Ying Qian and Jingnyu Wang, all graduates of Camberwell College of Arts, with backgrounds spanning product and jewellery design. The name comes from the hour at which the work apparently gets done, which anyone who has run a small studio will recognise.

Household objects that are quietly ridiculous

Egg cups shaped like cats. A duck lying down as an incense holder. A goose that holds your seasoning. Whisky cups standing on chair legs. A castle candle holder complete with a moat. A stairs series drawn from medieval stone castles, which sounds grand until you realise it is a flower pot.

Practical first, funny second

The joke never gets in the way of the object. These are things you use at breakfast, not things you look at. Everything is designed around overlooked domestic rituals, which is a rather elegant way of saying somebody thought properly about the egg.
