Twenty years, and the same three instructions

Tracey Samuel spent years designing womenswear in Paris before her daughter Alice arrived in 2005 and she turned her attention, and a technical knitwear background, to considerably smaller garments. The bonniemob has been going ever since, from Brighton, and the motto has never changed.

Knitted to shape rather than cut out of it

Their knits are fully fashioned, which means the machine knits the shape of the garment rather than knitting a sheet and cutting pieces out. It takes longer, produces almost no offcuts, and the result holds together for considerably more washes. Tracey will tell you at some length why this matters, and she is right.

Almost everything they make is GOTS certified, audited by the Soil Association, and they publish the licence number so you can check it. In a category where everybody says organic, actually handing over the reference is a rarer thing than it should be. Knitting takes place in Hong Kong and China, which they also say plainly, because that is where the machines are.

Colours chosen against the obvious ones

Rainbows, bunnies, shooting stars, and a determined avoidance of pale pink and soft blue. Ages 0 to 9, with swimwear made from recycled bottles and a hand-crocheted Bonnie Bunny for anybody who has run out of ideas.
