Engraved On A Fast Turning Wheel, By Hand.
Camilla and Henry Davies were antiques dealers, and spent years turning up beautiful engraved glassware at English markets and salerooms: pieces from the 1890s through the 1920s, the sort of thing that catches the light halfway down a table and makes an ordinary Tuesday feel faintly like an occasion. The difficulty with antique glass, as every dealer discovers, is that you can almost never find six of anything. So in 2015 they gave up looking and started making it instead.
Each piece is mouth blown into a mould and then held by hand against a fast turning engraving wheel, which is slow, skilled work and the reason no two are quite identical. The patterns come straight from the period: Lens with its band of connecting ovals, Ovals with its florals, Stars, Spears. It is lead free crystal and, rather wonderfully, dishwasher safe, which makes these glasses for a Wednesday rather than ornaments to be admired through the door of a cabinet. Anthropologie and a great many wedding lists have already reached the same conclusion.
