PLINT - Everyday Things, Designed in Denmark by Three Generations of the Same Family

PLINT is a Danish design house run by the same family across three generations, which rather suggests they have got the hang of it. Their idea is disarmingly simple: make the things you use every day, and make them well enough that you still like them every day. The designs take their cue from clean Nordic lines, add a generous helping of practicality, and then do something refreshingly un-Scandinavian with colour. The result sits somewhere between modern and nostalgic, which is exactly where a kettle ought to sit.

The kettle that thinks it is a thermos

The PLINT kettle is the one Danish food bloggers have been quietly recommending to each other. It holds 1.7 litres, looks like it came from a rather good 1950s kitchen, and is double-walled, so the water stays hot long after it has boiled. You can set it to 60, 90 or 100 degrees, which means green tea no longer has to be scalded and nobody has to stand about waiting for it to cool. It comes in a whole range of colours, alongside teapots, teacups, brew mugs and a teapot warmer in matching shades, so the entire tea round can coordinate.

For the rest of the kitchen, and the washing up

Beyond the kettle there are kitchen scales, a breadbox, a retro wall clock, and a surprisingly handsome set of washing up kit: dish rack, dish soap bottle and brush. None of it strictly needs to be beautiful. All of it is anyway, which is rather the point.

Watering cans built the way they used to be

Out in the garden, PLINT's watering cans come in sizes from a dainty 0.9 litres for houseplants to a serious 9 litres for the vegetable patch. They are made from thick steel with welded seams, hot-dip galvanised in zinc at 460 degrees, and finished with a small brass nameplate. Choose raw zinc, which develops a lovely patina with age, or a powder-coated colour such as Terracotta Rose, Summer Green or Winter White. There are balcony pot holders and flowerpots to match, should you wish to take the whole thing seriously.
