Aromatherapy Candles Named After the Things You Actually Do. Sleep, Eat, and the Rest.

AIRO, pronounced ah'-ee-ro, is a verb meaning to raise up or elevate, and that is the entire brief: clean, refillable aromatherapy for the everyday rituals you already have. The candles are named with disarming honesty after the moments they serve. SLEEP blends lavender, Himalayan cedarwood, lemon verbena and ylang ylang to see you off properly. EAT burns away the cooking smell rather than arguing with it. SEX requires no further explanation from us, and the ZEST Loo Drops handle the room nobody writes poetry about. There are SMILE and ALFRESCO diffusers and room mists besides, plus minis and gift sets.

Nothing synthetic, nothing thrown away

Every scent comes from essential oils, extracted directly from plants, flowers and trees, on plant-based waxes, with everything vegan and cruelty free. The larger candles burn for over sixty hours in handblown glass that is designed to be kept, because when the wax runs out you simply drop in a refill rather than binning a perfectly good vessel. There is even a refill subscription, for those who have found their scent and see no reason to ever run dry.

The pound that lights up a few faces

The founder, Lisa, is training as a clinical aromatherapist, working with older adults living with dementia, and the brand follows her lead: £1 from every candle goes to dementia charities, with Dementia UK as the launch partner. One in eleven people over 65 in the UK will develop dementia, and a candle that gives a little back strikes us as a rather good use of a flame.

Where to next
