Everybody owns fourteen tote bags

They are in the cupboard under the stairs, in the boot, in the drawer with the batteries. And yet the moment you are standing at a till, none of them is anywhere near you. The useful bag is not the handsomest one. It is the one small enough to have been in your pocket since Tuesday.
