Lowlands Design
Three Dutch Houses, Under One Roof.
Lowlands brings three rather good Dutch names to Britain and Ireland, and the three sit together better than you might expect. DutZ Collection is the glass: mouth blown by master glass blowers, in colours properly saturated rather than politely tinted, across vases in every proportion from squat to improbably tall, along with bowls, planters, candleholders and hurricanes. No two pieces come out identical, because that is simply not how blowing glass works.
Studio ROOF is the one that surprises people. Founded in Amsterdam in 2005 by a couple and their three children, it makes flat-packed 3D decorations in recycled cardboard printed with vegetable-based inks. You press out the pieces and slot them together into a beetle, a bird of paradise, a lobster, a rhinoceros or a whole wall of butterflies, and the building is half the point. They work as well over a desk as in a nursery, which is why they turn up in museum shops the world over.
Global Affairs makes the third strand: dolls, soft toys and accessories for babies and small children, every one knitted or crocheted by hand. These are the toys that get named within ten minutes and eventually retired to a shelf rather than a bin, because nobody in the house can quite face parting with them. Between them the three cover a table, a wall and a cot, which is a decent day's work for any distributor.
