Rocky's Pet Products, run from Wakefield with some supervision from a dog called Rocky, sells kits for making your own dog lead, which sounds faintly unlikely until you have seen the finished thing. Each kit comes with the cord, a snap hook, a braiding disk and a link to a video tutorial, and assumes you already have a needle, some thread and a pair of scissors somewhere in the house.

The braiding is done on a kumihimo disk, a Japanese technique that turns out to be a good deal more soothing than it looks, and there are matching kits for collars and poo bag holders for anyone who finishes the lead and finds they cannot stop. The finished leads suit small and medium dogs rather than determined pullers, which is refreshingly candid for a pet brand.
